Dimsdale, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at UC San Diego, revisits the famous psychiatric and psychological assessments performed at Nuremberg by the Army psychiatrist Douglas M. Kelley and the Army psychologist Gustave M. Gilbert on the principal Nazi defendants, Hermann Göring, Robert Ley, Julius Streicher, and Rudolf Hess.
Drawing on unpublished correspondence, the original Rorschach protocols, and intelligence files, Dimsdale traces what the two clinicians concluded, why they reached opposite verdicts on whether Nazi leadership represented identifiable psychopathology, and what subsequent psychological research can say about the puzzle, asking whether the men behind the Holocaust were insane, or simply evil.
