Coping with the Nazi Past: West German Debates on Nazism and Generational Conflict, 1955–1975, 2006
Between 1955 and 1975, West Germany confronted its Nazi past through explosive public debates, criminal trials, and generational conflicts that would define what kind of democracy it would become. The two decades that culminated in the 1968 student revolt were the period in which the postwar generation of West Germans first confronted, and bitterly clashed over, the legacy of National Socialism.
From the publisher: "The contributors offer an in-depth analysis of how the collective memory of Nazism and the Holocaust influenced, and was influenced by, politics and culture in West Germany in the 1960s." Pivotal events examined include the anti-Semitic graffiti that appeared on synagogue walls in Cologne and other West German cities in late 1959/early 1960; the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem; the Fischer and Jaspers controversies; the Auschwitz trial in Frankfurt; and parliamentary debates about the statute of limitations on Nazi crimes.
