This festschrift volume in honour of historian Georg G. Iggers takes the parallel histories of German Jews and African Americans as a comparative lens for thinking about how modern democracies have included and excluded minorities, Iggers himself, a German-Jewish refugee who later taught civil-rights protesters in the American South, embodied that crossing of boundaries.
