In May 1931, a 28-year-old Berlin defence lawyer named Hans Litten subpoenaed Adolf Hitler as a witness in the Eden Dance Palace trial and cross-examined him for three gruelling hours about Nazi violence, the only time anyone made Hitler testify under oath about the SA's tactics, and an act of legal defiance and courage that exposed the lies and violence at the core of the Nazi movement, which Hitler never forgot or forgave, and for which Litten ultimately paid with his life.

After the Nazis came to power Litten was arrested on the night of the Reichstag fire, tortured and held in concentration camps for five years until his death at Dachau. The book traces both Litten's fate after the Nazi seizure of power and the transformation of the German judicial system under the Nazis.
