Between 1940 and 1944, Vichy's denaturalization commission stripped some 15,000 French citizens, most of them Jews naturalized in the 1920s and 1930s, of their citizenship, exposing them to deportation and murder. Zalc reconstructs the commission's work through meticulous archival and statistical research, combining large-scale data analysis with individual case histories to humanize the statistics of administrative persecution.
