Michael Burleigh's scholarly study of Ostforschung, the field of academic 'research on the East', and the way an entire scholarly discipline was harnessed to the Nazi project. Combining intellectual history, biography, and analysis of particular institutions, Burleigh traces how German experts on Eastern Europe were drawn onto a path that culminated in biological racism and the exploitation of the occupied territories. The book moves from the rise of classical Osteuropaforschung (1902–33), through the wartime 'Watch in the East' and the research institutes operating in the occupied East between 1940 and 1945, to the legacies of Ostforschung after 1945.
