The Hitler Youth was founded in 1933 soon after the Nazi Party assumed power in Germany. By induction, nearly all German juveniles between the ages of ten and eighteen were enrolled, as the regime sought to produce a new generation of German youth uniformly loyal to the Nazi cause.
Drawing on original reports, letters, diaries, and memoirs, Michael H. Kater traces the social and institutional history of the Hitler Youth, examining the means, degree, and impact of conversion, and the subsequent fate of young recruits. Focuses on the dialectic of emancipation and subjection that characterized HJ activities, and the collective experience of those born between 1916 and 1934.
