For decades, German women in the Nazi killing fields were classified as bystanders. Wendy Lower's twenty years of archival research demolish that assumption: she recovers the role of approximately half a million ordinary German women, secretaries, nurses, teachers, SS auxiliaries, and wives, posted to the Nazi-occupied East who were active participants in the Nazi genocide in the occupied eastern territories. They were not merely witnesses: they participated in shopping sprees through Jewish ghettos, attended killing-field picnics, and some were direct perpetrators who shot Jews themselves.
Drawing on archival sources and post-war investigations, Lower reconstructs the perpetrators' lives. National Book Award finalist and National Jewish Book Award finalist; translated into twenty-three languages.
Wendy Lower is the John K. Roth Professor of History at Claremont McKenna College and former director of the USHMM Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies.
