From the beginnings of the League of German Girls (Bund Deutscher Mädel) in 1933 to the defeat of 1945, Tim Heath explores the roles of German girls and women in Hitler's Third Reich. The Bund Deutscher Mädel, the female branch of the Hitler Youth, drew German girls and young women into Nazi ideology, wartime service, and a difficult post-war reckoning.
Drawing from firsthand accounts of women indoctrinated into the Jung Mädel and Bund Deutscher Mädel, and through first-person interviews and surviving correspondence with former members, Heath examines what was expected of them and how they delivered, as defined by the Nazi state, and documents their experiences and post-war lives.
