A landmark and controversial work arguing that the vast majority of ordinary Germans were 'willing executioners' in the Holocaust, driven by a unique and virulent 'eliminationist antisemitism' deeply embedded in German political culture across centuries. The perpetrators, Goldhagen contends, were therefore not coerced functionaries but ordinary Germans acting on conviction. Drawing on records of police battalions, work camps, and death marches, the book provides evidence that the extermination of European Jewry engaged the energies and enthusiasm of tens of thousands of ordinary Germans.
The book generated major scholarly controversy (notably in dialogue with Christopher Browning's Ordinary Men) and remains a landmark of Holocaust historiography. Winner of the Democracy Prize of the Journal for German and International Politics; a publishing phenomenon that achieved wide popular fame despite mostly critical reception among professional historians.
