A book-length study of one of the most contested issues of contemporary international humanitarian law, when and how civilians who take a direct part in hostilities (insurgents, militias, private military contractors, cyber operators) lose their protected status under the Geneva Conventions and Additional Protocols. Crawford traces the legal history of "direct participation in hostilities" from the American Civil War through the ICRC's 2009 Interpretive Guidance, analysing how courts and military doctrine have struggled to keep pace with drone strikes, targeted killings, and modern cyber warfare.
