Emmanuel Ringelblum (1900–1944) was the historian and archivist of the Warsaw Ghetto who founded the Oneg Shabbat secret archive that documented life and death inside the ghetto. Written from 1940 until shortly before his murder in 1944, his clandestine wartime notes are among the most important first-hand primary sources on the destruction of Polish Jewry, a fundamental eyewitness record of life and death under Nazi occupation, through anecdotes, stories, and observations accumulated over years of first-person witness.
Ringelblum buried his notebooks in caches beneath the Warsaw Ghetto just before the April 1943 Uprising; they were unearthed from the rubble of the destroyed ghetto in 1946 and 1950, reconstructed from milk-cans and metal boxes recovered after the war.
Edited and translated by Jacob Sloan. Originally published by McGraw-Hill, 1958, with many subsequent reprints. This copy is a later reprint paperback edition. ~369 pp.
