Military officers, conservatives, Socialists, clergy, diverse groups within Germany chose to resist Hitler from the inside. On the Road to the Wolf's Lair is a deeply researched history of the long, painful road that led a small group of Germans from accommodation with the Third Reich to active resistance, and ultimately to Stauffenberg's bomb in the Wolf's Lair on 20 July 1944.

The book draws extensively on primary sources and personal testimonies to reconstruct both the nature of the resistance and the moral dilemmas faced by those who chose to act.
Theodore S. Hamerow (1920–2013), born in Warsaw to Yiddish-theatre parents, was George L. Mosse Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

תיאודור ס. המרוב (1920–2013), יליד ורשה להורים מתיאטרון יידיש, כיהן כפרופסור להיסטוריה על שם ג'ורג' ל. מוסה באוניברסיטת ויסקונסין–מדיסון.
