Propaganda, Edward Bernays (Introduction by Mark Crispin Miller), Ig Publishing 2005
Written in 1928 by Edward Bernays (1891–1995), nephew of Sigmund Freud and one of the founding figures of modern public relations, this short, candid text laid out with unusual frankness the techniques by which mass public opinion can be shaped and managed. Bernays sets out the explicit thesis that the conscious and intelligent manipulation of organized public opinion is an indispensable element of democratic society. The book had an outsized and uneasy afterlife: Bernays himself recounted in his autobiography that Joseph Goebbels kept his earlier book 'Crystallizing Public Opinion' (1923) on his bookshelf at the Propaganda Ministry. With an introduction by Mark Crispin Miller, professor of media studies at NYU. Originally published in 1928 by Horace Liveright; reprinted by Ig Publishing, Brooklyn, 2005.
