The first edited and contextualised publication of more than 100 wartime intelligence reports prepared for the U.S. Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the wartime forerunner of the CIA, by Franz Neumann (author of Behemoth), Herbert Marcuse and Otto Kirchheimer, three of the most influential émigré scholars of the Frankfurt School, between 1943 and 1949. The reports analyse the structure of the Nazi state, the German military, occupation policies and propaganda, and propose frameworks for postwar German reconstruction and denazification that significantly influenced Allied policy.
