An American correspondent who spent years embedded in the Nazi court system, Edith Roper documented from direct observation how the machinery of German law was systematically perverted to serve the regime, exposing how the legal apparatus of the Third Reich was used to persecute the regime's opponents through a first-hand reconstruction of Nazi "justice" from the records of the courts themselves. Working alongside journalist Clara Leiser, who translated and arranged her firsthand records for American readers, Roper produced what Foreign Affairs called upon its 1941 publication "an important and depressing book."
