The Nazi regime needed academics to do its dirty work, anthropologists, historians and biologists who dressed racial persecution in the language of scholarship. Steinweis examines how German universities and academic institutes, through the new disciplines of Judaic Studies (Judenforschung), racial anthropology, and Volkskunde, built a body of antisemitic scholarship that supplied the intellectual scaffolding for Nazi Jewish policy.
He focuses on figures such as Walter Frank, Wilhelm Grau, and Karl Georg Kuhn, and on institutions such as the Reichsinstitut für Geschichte des Neuen Deutschlands and the Frankfurter Institut zur Erforschung der Judenfrage.
Alan E. Steinweis is Miller Distinguished Professor of Holocaust Studies at the University of Vermont.
