The first English-language publication of the Soviet 'Black Book', the documentary record of the German extermination of Soviet Jewry, compiled in secret between 1943 and 1945 by the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee under Ehrenburg and Grossman as the Nazis were massacring Soviet Jews. The work draws on eyewitness accounts, letters, and survivor testimonies from the occupied Soviet territories and from the Polish death camps, recording mass shootings, gas vans, and the destruction of Jewish communities.
The book was suppressed by Stalin in the late 1940s; the type was destroyed and the manuscript circulated only in samizdat for decades. Translated by John Glad and James S. Levine.
