Jacques Delarue (1919–2014), a French Resistance fighter who was deported and tortured by the Gestapo, and who served after the war as a senior officer in the French police, brings unmatched moral authority to this comprehensive account of the Nazi secret police: its 1933 origins under Göring and Heydrich, its absorption into the SS apparatus, its operational history in occupied Europe, and its role in the persecution and deportation of European Jews and the suppression of resistance movements. Includes the postwar fate of its leadership.
