Edward Alexander, literary scholar and critic of antisemitism and anti-Zionism, assembled these essays to defend what he called the 'Jewish idea': the conception of Jews as a covenanted people with a claim on history and identity. Ranging across literary criticism, intellectual history, journalism, and politics, the collection addresses the manifold enemies of that idea, historical, ideological, and cultural.
Edward Alexander is Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Washington, known for his polemical defence of Israel and his critiques of figures and movements he regards as hostile to Jewish self-determination. The volume gathers his essays on Jewish identity, Zionism, antisemitism, and the cultural politics surrounding the State of Israel and the memory of the Holocaust.
