The Leipzig Trials: German War Crimes and Their Legal Consequences after World War I, Gerd Hankel, Republic of Letters Publishing
The first systematic and comprehensive scholarly assessment in English of the approximately 1,700 cases brought before the Reichsgericht in Leipzig between 1921 and 1927 against German war criminals from the First World War. The second and largest part of the book works methodically through the categories of accusations, systematic cruelty, murder, mistreatment of prisoners of war, forced labor, submarine warfare, and air warfare, providing rich accounts of proceedings, defense arguments, and judgments. Gerd Hankel, a lawyer and linguist, examines the trials both from inside the courtroom and from the broader perspectives of international diplomacy and the domestic politics of Germany and the involved nations.

Republic of Letters
