Commissioned by the OSS in 1943 and classified for nearly thirty years, this psychological profile of Adolf Hitler was the United States government's formal attempt to understand, and predict, the man directing history's most destructive regime. Prepared by psychoanalyst Walter C. Langer for William "Wild Bill" Donovan of the U.S. Office of Strategic Services, in collaboration with Henry A. Murray, Ernst Kris, and Bertram D. Lewin, the report addressed how Hitler viewed himself, how his associates perceived him, and how he might behave as the war turned against Germany.
Drawing on contemporary documents and interviews with informants who had known Hitler personally, Langer's report attempted to predict Hitler's likely behaviour at the war's end and famously anticipated his suicide, a pioneering exercise in "psychohistorical reconstruction" applied to wartime intelligence.
Officially titled A Psychological Analysis of Adolph Hitler: His Life and Legend, the report remained classified until 1972, when it was published commercially for the first time. Foreword by William L. Langer; afterword by Robert G. L. Waite.
