The first full-scale, statistically grounded study of who actually joined the Nazi party, analyzing the social class, occupation, age, sex, and locality of NSDAP members and leaders from the party's beginnings in Munich in 1919 through to its destruction in 1945. Kater drew on the party's own membership card files and on local and regional party member lists. The book has long been regarded as the definitive sociological profile of the Nazi movement.
