In 1919, the victorious Allies gathered in Paris to write the peace that would end all wars, and produced a treaty that left almost everyone dissatisfied and planted the conditions for the next conflict. Michael S. Neiberg reconstructs the competing pressures on Wilson, Clemenceau, Lloyd George, and Orlando: domestic publics demanding vengeance, the spectre of Bolshevism spreading westward, and the aspirations of colonised peoples for self-determination, and traces the long shadow the treaty cast over inter-war Europe and the rise of National Socialism.
