Written in the last months of peace before World War II, E. H. Carr's The Twenty Years' Crisis (first published 1939 by Macmillan, London) delivered a devastating critique of the liberal-utopian belief that international peace could rest on morality and law alone, and established political realism as the dominant framework of international relations scholarship for generations.
E. H. Carr (1892–1982) was a British historian, diplomat, and international relations theorist, also known for his multi-volume A History of Soviet Russia. This Palgrave Macmillan reissue (2001) carries a lengthy critical introduction by Michael Cox of the London School of Economics, placing Carr in the context of the discipline he helped to create.
