A documentary anthology drawn from the Oneg Shabbat archive, the clandestine archive organised by Emanuel Ringelblum inside the Warsaw Ghetto from 1940 onward, and buried in milk cans and metal boxes before the ghetto's destruction in 1943. The writers, poets, journalists and diarists trapped inside the ghetto kept writing, recording the destruction of their world even as the ghetto was liquidated around them.
The volume gathers diaries, letters, essays, sociological surveys, photographs, posters, songs, and children's writings, presented in English translation with editorial introductions, covering the period 1939 to 1943.
David G. Roskies is Sol and Evelyn Henkind Chair in Yiddish Literature and Culture at the Jewish Theological Seminary; the foreword is by Samuel D. Kassow, Charles H. Northam Professor of History at Trinity College and the author of the seminal study 'Who Will Write Our History?' Part of the Posen Library of Jewish Culture and Civilization.
