A Nazi Past examines hundreds of SS members, party functionaries, and intelligence agents who quietly navigated the transition to postwar life and successfully assimilated into a changed society after the war ended.
The book examines figures such as Hans Globke (who escaped punishment for his involvement in formulating the Third Reich's anti-Semitic legislation and forged a successful political career) and Gestapo employee Gertrud Slottke (who eluded trial for fifteen years). Contributors also explore how a network of Nazi spies and diplomats recast their identities in Franco's Spain, far from the denazification proceedings in Germany. Based on extensive archival research and recently declassified U.S. intelligence, the volume contributes greatly to understanding the postwar politics of memory.
