Carl Schmitt: Theorist for the Reich, Joseph W. Bendersky, Princeton University Press
The first comprehensive English-language intellectual biography of the German jurist Carl Schmitt (1888–1985), who theorised sovereignty, the state of exception, and the concept of the political, and joined the NSDAP in 1933 to become "Crown Jurist" of the Third Reich. Bendersky traces Schmitt's trajectory from Weimar liberal constitutional theorist to Nazi collaborator, drawing on Schmitt's published writings, archival documentation and his personal papers, and advances the controversial thesis that Schmitt's late-Weimar writings aimed to defend the constitutional state against, not to invite, Nazi power. The volume also covers Schmitt's post-war return to scholarship.
