Die Juden in der Karikatur: Ein Beitrag zur Kulturgeschichte, Eduard Fuchs's Landmark Study of Antisemitic Caricature, Albert Langen, Munich, 1921, First Edition

A monumental cultural-historical study tracing the visual history of antisemitic caricature in Europe from the fourteenth century to the author's own time, compiled by Eduard Fuchs (1870–1940), one of the most significant cultural historians and art collectors of Weimar Germany, and a work whose own author's fate would tragically illustrate the very forces it documented.

Fuchs was a leading Marxist intellectual, a founding member of the Spartacus League and of the German Communist Party, and a close friend and financial supporter of Rosa Luxemburg. His scholarly reputation rested on a series of richly illustrated cultural histories, of manners, erotic art, and caricature, built on one of the most important private art collections in Berlin. This 1921 work assembles and analyzes 307 in-text illustrations and 31 supplementary plates, systematically documenting how antisemitic imagery evolved across six centuries of European visual culture, not as propaganda, but as a serious scholarly reckoning with the roots of the prejudice that would soon engulf its own author.

When the Nazis seized power in 1933, Fuchs and his Jewish wife fled Germany for Paris. His Berlin villa was raided by the Gestapo that same month, and in October 1933 his entire art collection, the product of decades of collecting, was formally seized by the regime. Impoverished and in failing health, Fuchs died in exile in Paris in January 1940, less than two years before this very copy of his book would be printed into an entirely different, and infinitely darker, chapter of German history.

First edition, published by Albert Langen, Munich, 1921. Red cloth binding with an illustrated panel mounted to the front board and gilt lettering. Condition: Good, binding preserved with light wear to the extremities; pages lightly toned with age but complete
