David Lloyd George's own retrospective account of the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, written by the man who, as British Prime Minister and one of the "Big Four" alongside Wilson, Clemenceau, and Orlando, helped draft the peace settlement that redrew the map of Europe and the Middle East after the First World War.
Published in 1938, near the end of Lloyd George's life, this two-volume work draws on the minutes of the Council of Ten and the Council of Four, still secret documents at the time, along with his own letters and recollections, to defend his role in shaping the treaties and to argue against what he saw as unfair criticism of the settlement. Volume I addresses the terms imposed on Germany, including reparations and the territorial provisions that would remain a source of bitter resentment in the years leading to the Second World War. Volume II turns to the wider settlement: the Italian claim to Fiume, the competing Czechoslovak, Austrian-German, and Hungarian territorial demands, and, of particular interest to collectors of Judaica and Zionist history, an extended treatment of "the whole Palestine question," reflecting Lloyd George's own central role, as wartime Prime Minister, in the issuing of the Balfour Declaration and the shaping of the British Mandate for Palestine.
The book appeared at a charged historical moment: in 1938, with Europe sliding toward war and the Munich Crisis unfolding, the legacy of Versailles, and whether its severity had helped produce Hitler, was a live and urgent question. Lloyd George himself had visited Hitler in Germany in 1936 and controversially praised him on his return, a fact that adds a further layer of historical irony to his defense, two years later, of the peace he had helped design.
This is the first edition, in the Canadian issue distributed jointly by Victor Gollancz Ltd, London, and The Ryerson Press, Toronto. Complete set of two volumes, original blue cloth with gilt titling, illustrated with photographic plates including the signing of the peace in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. Ex-library copy, formerly of the Victoria Public Library, with library stamps and shelf-mark to the title pages and a later "Booksale" deaccession stamp.
