Fritz Bauer (1903–1968) was the German-Jewish jurist who, as Attorney General of the state of Hesse in postwar West Germany, was the driving force behind the capture of Adolf Eichmann, secretly tipping off the Israeli Mossad to Eichmann's location in Argentina in 1957, and behind the Frankfurt Auschwitz Trials of 1963–1965, which for the first time brought low-ranking SS perpetrators of the Holocaust to justice in a German court.
Without Fritz Bauer, a Jewish prosecutor working within a West German justice system still riddled with former Nazis, Adolf Eichmann might never have been caught, and the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials might never have happened. Ronen Steinke's biography explores Bauer's Jewish identity, his struggles against latent antisemitism within the German justice system, and his pioneering work in Holocaust accountability.
