The first comprehensive study in English of the Holocaust in the Lublin District of occupied Poland, where the Aktion Reinhard extermination programme was launched and where the death camps Belzec, Sobibor, and Majdanek operated. As the headquarters of 'Operation Reinhard,' Lublin was central to Nazi anti-Jewish policy and the systematic murder of Polish Jewry.
Nine thematically organised chapters discuss the Nisko Plan, German administration, forced labour, the chronology of ghettoisation, deportations to the extermination camps, killings, and Jewish responses, drawing on extensive Yiddish, Hebrew, Polish, German, and survivor-testimony sources. A finalist for the National Jewish Book Award and the Yad Vashem International Book Prize in Holocaust Research.
