Written by a Theresienstadt and Auschwitz survivor on the basis of documents he secretly removed from the ghetto archive, H. G. Adler's 884-page study is the first scholarly monograph ever written on a single concentration camp, and remains the single most detailed and comprehensive account of any. The book covers the history, sociology, and psychology of the Theresienstadt ghetto and is a foundational work in Holocaust scholarship.
Adler divides the book into three sections: a history of the ghetto, a detailed institutional and social analysis of the camp, and an attempt to understand the psychology of the perpetrators and the victims.
H. G. Adler (1910–1988) was deported to Theresienstadt with his family in 1942 and later transported to Auschwitz; eighteen members of his family perished in the camps. He received the Leo Baeck Prize for Theresienstadt 1941–1945.
