The Theory and Practice of Hell: The German Concentration Camps and the System Behind Them, Eugen Kogon, Farrar Straus & Giroux 2006, Contemporary Account
One of the earliest and most authoritative analytical accounts of the German concentration-camp system, written by Eugen Kogon, an Austrian political scientist and Buchenwald survivor, in the months immediately following liberation. Kogon (1903–1987) was imprisoned at Buchenwald from 1939 to 1945; the book first appeared in German in 1946 as 'Der SS-Staat'. It covers the organizational structure of the camps, the SS hierarchy, daily life for prisoners, methods of killing, and the psychological effects of the system. This 2006 Farrar, Straus and Giroux edition includes a new introduction by Nikolaus Wachsmann.
