Einstein, Brecht, Heinrich Mann, Hannah Arendt, the writers, artists, and intellectuals who fled Nazi Germany for America left behind one culture and arrived, often bewildered, in another. Hitler's Exiles is an anthology of more than fifty first-person accounts, diaries, letters, memoirs, and oral histories, by the men, women, and children who fled Nazi Germany and Austria for the United States between 1933 and the early 1940s, the German-speaking emigration that re-shaped a generation of American intellectual life.
Contributors include Hannah Arendt, Hans Sahl, Heinrich Mann, Stefan Zweig, and Lotte Lenya, alongside many less-famous refugees. The anthology is organised thematically around departure, the journey, arrival, language, identity, and Americanisation. A standard primary-source reader on the German-speaking emigration and a rich cultural history of the German-Jewish intellectual diaspora in America.
