Henry Ashby Turner's account of the political events in Germany during January 1933 that culminated in Adolf Hitler's appointment as Chancellor on 30 January. Turner, a Yale University historian, recreates the bewildering circumstances surrounding Hitler's unexpected appointment, drawing vivid portraits of the central players, Hindenburg, Schleicher, Papen, and making use of newly available documents. A central argument of the book is that while the end of Weimar democracy was probably inevitable, Hitler's specific rise to power was not: it was the product of contingent decisions and miscalculations rather than historical necessity.
