The Ravine: A Family, a Photograph, a Holocaust Massacre Revealed, Wendy Lower, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 2021
In 2009, Holocaust scholar Wendy Lower was shown an exceptionally rare photograph: a single 1941 'action shot' captured at the Miropol ravine in Ukraine, documenting the actual murder of a Jewish family, a mother and her child, by German officials, Ukrainian auxiliary policemen, and a Slovak collaborator. Virtually no such images documenting a Jewish family at the actual moment of murder have survived.
Lower's microhistorical and forensic investigation, conducted across archives in Ukraine, Germany, Slovakia, Israel, and the United States, uncovers the identities of the victims, the killers, and, remarkably, the photographer himself who took the picture as a secret act of resistance, reconstructing the "Holocaust by bullets" in the occupied Soviet territories.
