Iva Toguri d'Aquino is the only person in U.S. history to have been convicted of treason and later pardoned for it, a Nisei woman tried in 1949 as the mythical 'Tokyo Rose,' though no one had ever actually called her by that name. The first ever presidential pardon granted for treason in U.S. history.
When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Iva was nursing an ailing aunt in Japan and was prevented from returning home. Pressured to find employment, she joined Radio Tokyo, where she emceed brief music segments on 'The Zero Hour' during the war's last two years. She was but one among a dozen or so English-speaking women heard on Japanese airwaves.
After the war, ambitious journalists who were certain she was Tokyo Rose interviewed her despite her denial; the published story brought her to the attention of American authorities, who tried and convicted her for treason despite the lack of evidence and a reluctant jury. Yasuhide Kawashima reconstructs the wartime broadcasts, the F.B.I. and Department of Justice prosecution, and the trial itself, through to her 1977 pardon by President Gerald Ford and the restoration of her citizenship.
Yasuhide Kawashima is a native of Nagasaki and was Professor of History at the University of Texas at El Paso.
