The Nürnberg Case as Presented by Robert H. Jackson, Chief of Counsel for the United States, Alfred A. Knopf 1947 - First Edition - Rare

The chief prosecutor's own account of the Nuremberg trial, assembled and published by Robert H. Jackson himself the year after the verdict, not a journalist's or historian's retelling, but Jackson's personal selection of the record he built.

Jackson, an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, was appointed by President Truman in May 1945 as U.S. Chief of Counsel for the prosecution of major Axis war criminals, and became the principal architect of the legal framework behind the International Military Tribunal. This volume opens with his original report to Truman of 7 June 1945, proposing the trial in the first place, followed by the London Agreement of 8 August 1945 that formally established the Tribunal. It reproduces in full his Opening Statement for the United States, delivered 21 November 1945, one of the most quoted addresses in the history of international law, containing the famous line that the wrongs being tried "have been so calculated, so malignant, and so devastating, that civilization cannot tolerate their being ignored, because it cannot survive their being repeated." Also included is his 28 February 1946 legal argument establishing the criminality of the Nazi organizations themselves, the SS, the Gestapo, the SD, and the party leadership corps, as well as his Closing Address of 26 July 1946, and excerpts from his courtroom cross-examinations of four defendants and witnesses: Hermann Göring, Hjalmar Schacht, Albert Speer, and Erhard Milch. The Göring cross-examination in particular is still cited as one of the most dramatic confrontations in courtroom history. The book closes with the final section of Jackson's report to the President of 7 October 1946.
