Backing Hitler: Consent and Coercion in Nazi Germany, Robert Gellately, Oxford University Press 2001
Robert Gellately argues that the majority of German citizens had a clear picture of the extent of Nazi atrocities and continued to support the Reich until its bitter end. The book's most original contribution is its argument that the German press publicized the regime's punitive measures so thoroughly that no German could plausibly have remained ignorant of the scale of repression, thereby forging a consensus between the Third Reich and ordinary Germans that violent campaigns against 'undesirables' were essential to restoring order and preserving community values. Building on his earlier study The Gestapo and German Society (1990), Gellately emphasizes the active contribution of ordinary Germans, who legitimated the Nazi regime's network of repression and frequently denounced suspected enemies in their midst.
