Hitler Speaks: A Series of Political Conversations with Adolf Hitler on His Real Aims, Hermann Rauschning, Thornton Butterworth 1939 (Kessinger Legacy Reprint), Contemporary Account
Hermann Rauschning was President of the Danzig Senate and one of the first senior Nazis to break publicly with Hitler, and in 1939, at the very moment Europe was sliding into war, he published this record of their private conversations from 1932–1934. Written while those meetings were fresh, and while Hitler's aims were still contested by the outside world, it became one of the most widely read, and debated, accounts of Hitler's private ideology, in which Hitler purportedly revealed his radical aims.
Originally published in London in 1939 (Thornton Butterworth) and in the United States in 1940 as The Voice of Destruction (G. P. Putnam's Sons). Highly influential when first published; the authenticity of the conversations was challenged from the 1980s onward by the historian Wolfgang Hänel and others, and the work is today regarded as substantially fabricated, though it shaped early Western understanding of Hitler and remains an important historical-historiographical document.
