A scholarly study of the Frankfurt Auschwitz Trial (1963–1965), West Germany's largest reckoning with Auschwitz, in which 22 former Auschwitz personnel faced criminal charges for their roles in mass murder. Rebecca Wittmann argues that the trial both advanced and constrained justice: it broke new ground in German legal reckoning with the Nazi past, while the constraints of ordinary criminal law, forcing prosecutors to argue ordinary murder statutes and focus the proof on individual sadism and 'excess', paradoxically obscured the systemic, bureaucratic nature of the Holocaust.
