The Frankfurt Auschwitz Trial, 1963–1965: Genocide, History, and the Limits of the Law, Devin O. Pendas, Cambridge University Press
Devin Pendas's award-winning study of the largest trial of Nazi perpetrators in West German courts, twenty-two former SS men, including Auschwitz adjutant Robert Mulka and SS officer Wilhelm Boger, prosecuted in Frankfurt am Main between 1963 and 1965. Through close archival analysis of the full trial record, Pendas argues that the court ran up against a structural impossibility: West German criminal law required proof of individual criminal intent, a standard fundamentally ill-suited to the bureaucratised, industrialised nature of the Holocaust. The book also analyses the trial's role in shaping public memory of the Holocaust in the Federal Republic.
Devin O. Pendas is Professor of History at Boston College. Cover photograph by Erich Lessing: defendant Wilhelm Boger before the gate of Birkenau during the court's 1964 site visit to Auschwitz.

Cambridge University Press
