Hugo Grotius (1583–1645), the Dutch jurist and humanist, is often called the father of modern international law; his De Jure Belli ac Pacis (1625) is one of the founding texts of modern international law and just-war theory, establishing foundational principles of the law of nations, natural law, and the law of war and peace.
