From the Liberation purges to the Barbie trial, France struggled with the memory of the Vichy experience: defeat, occupation, repression, and complicity in the deportation of French Jews. Henry Rousso introduced the concept of the "Vichy syndrome", a recurring national pathology of memory in which French collaboration with Nazi Germany has been constructed, repressed, and reconstituted across French politics, law, film, and public culture from Liberation to the late twentieth century, to describe the collective guilt, shame, and denial around the collaborationist wartime government.
