Mein Kampf, First Complete and Unabridged English Translation, Printed at the Outbreak of World War II, New York, 1940

The first complete, unexpurgated English translation of Hitler's Mein Kampf, and the edition that emerged victorious from a fierce three-way publishing race in 1939, as American publishers rushed to bring the full text to English readers on the eve of war.

Until 1939, English-language readers had access only to a heavily condensed 1933 abridgment containing less than half of Hitler's original text. Following the Munich crisis of September 1938, Reynal & Hitchcock resolved that an unabridged edition was essential for the American public, and secured a license from Houghton Mifflin (holder of the American copyright) to publish a translation already underway by a team of scholars, many of them refugees, at the New School for Social Research. The project was overseen by a distinguished Committee of Editorial Sponsors: John Chamberlain, Sidney B. Fay, John Gunther, Carlton J. H. Hayes, Graham Hutton, Alvin Johnson, William L. Langer, Walter Millis, Raoul de Roussy de Sales, and George N. Shuster, who wrote in their preface that "the mere conquest of our enemies is not enough," and that they had "elected to set down without malice, yet with all the truth we can muster, the record as we see it."

A rival publisher, Stackpole Sons, rushed out its own unauthorized translation the same year, advertising that it paid no royalties to Hitler. Houghton Mifflin sued, and on 9 June 1939 the Second Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Hitler, as a "stateless author," was still entitled to American copyright protection, enjoining Stackpole from further sales and cementing the Reynal & Hitchcock text as the authorized American edition.

This edition is distinguished by two features found in no prior English printing: every passage that earlier abridged editions had silently cut is marked throughout with a printed black vertical line, allowing readers to see precisely what had been hidden from them; and extensive scholarly footnotes accompany the text, designed specifically to expose and contextualize the Nazi worldview for an American audience. The volume includes a folding map ("January 1, 1939") depicting the territorial extent of Nazi control, and runs to xxxvi + 1003 pages with a full index. All profits were pledged to refugee relief, the book's distribution through the Book-of-the-Month Club alone guaranteed $20,000 to the refugee fund, and Reynal & Hitchcock sold some 30,000 copies in its very first month.

This copy is the Thirteenth Impression, dated 1940, one of the successive wartime reprintings issued after the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, as American demand for the unabridged text surged with the outbreak of the Second World War in Europe. As such, it stands as a direct print artifact of the period in which the war began: a book Americans bought and read in real time in order to understand the ideology of the enemy they now faced.

Mein Kampf,
