The Fateful Alliance: German Conservatives and Nazis in 1933, The Machtergreifung in a New Light, Hermann Beck
On 30 January 1933 Hitler became Chancellor of Germany at the head of a coalition cabinet in which conservatives held a majority of posts and believed they had "tamed" him. Hermann Beck's revisionist archival study is a fundamental reassessment of the alliance between the German national-conservative right and National Socialism in that fateful year, and a refutation of the myth that the conservatives had any genuine prospect of containing Hitler.
From the publisher: "On 30 January 1933 Hitler became Chancellor of Germany at the head of a coalition government in which conservatives held a majority of cabinet posts. The conservatives believed they could 'tame' Hitler and use him for their own ends. Drawing on a wide range of newly examined sources, Hermann Beck offers a fundamental reassessment of the Machtergreifung, the Nazi seizure of power, and of the alliance between the German national-conservative right and National Socialism in 1933, showing how anti-Semitic violence, the Nazi takeover of state institutions, and the conservatives' own complicity destroyed the prospect of any genuine 'taming' of Hitler."
Beck argues that the conservatives, Papen, Hugenberg, and others, were not naive dupes who believed they could control Hitler, but rather actively chose to ally with him for their own political objectives. Praised by Henry A. Turner Jr. for its "illuminating original research and insightful analysis."
Hermann Beck is professor of modern German history at the University of Miami.
