The first book in German or English to critically examine the history of the Einsatzgruppen Trial, the 1947–48 American military trial (Case No. 9 of the Nuremberg subsequent proceedings) of twenty-four leadership members of the SS-Einsatzgruppen, the mobile killing squads that initiated the Final Solution in the Soviet Union and were responsible for the mobile-killing-unit massacres of Jews and Soviet civilians in the occupied East, for crimes against humanity and war crimes.
Earl traces the investigation, prosecution, sentencing (including the only death sentences carried out among the subsequent trials, the 1951 hangings at Landsberg of Otto Ohlendorf and three co-defendants), and the U.S. clemency reviews that freed the remaining defendants by 1958. Includes an extended analysis of the chief defendant Otto Ohlendorf, biographies of the major participants in the trial, and a collective biography of the defendants, drawing on recently declassified British and American intelligence documents, extensive archival material, and oral histories.
