Vattel's Law of Nations (1758) was the most influential treatise on international law in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, read by the American founders, repeatedly cited in early U.S. courts, and a touchstone of the law of war and neutrality long before the modern codified system existed. This foundational text by Swiss philosopher and diplomat Emer de Vattel (1714–1767) addresses the principles governing relations between sovereign states, including their rights and duties, war, peace, and treaties, and proved highly influential in the development of modern international law.
Modern scholarly reprint of Vattel's foundational French text Le droit des gens, ou Principes de la loi naturelle appliqués à la conduite et aux affaires des nations et des souverains. The Liberty Fund edition is based on the standard 1797 English text, edited and introduced by Béla Kapossy and Richard Whatmore, as part of the Natural Law and Enlightenment Classics series under the general editorship of Knud Haakonssen.
